The Origin & Rich History Behind Joseph Pilates And His Fitness Method
The life story of the creator who invented this world famous workout system
The popular exercise system we now call Pilates was created by Joseph Hubertus Pilates, a man born in Germany in 1883. During his early life, Joseph struggled with weak health conditions including asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. To improve his own physical strength, he dedicated himself to studying multiple forms of exercise, body mind therapy and movement science. During the First World War, he worked as a nurse and designed early exercise equipment for injured recovering patients.

How early 20th century physical therapy grew into today's global pilates trend
Later he moved to New York City in the United States and opened his very first Pilates fitness studio. Dancers quickly discovered that his method greatly improved their strength, balance and injury recovery speed. Over many decades, his original movement system slowly spread all around the world, evolving into both studio mat classes and modern reformer machine workouts. Understanding the history of pilates helps practitioners grasp its original goal: building full body health rather than fast, superficial fitness results.
